The communication talk tax introduced by the former administration some two years ago has bagged an amount of 119 million Ghana cedis since its introduction.

The talk tax introduced in July 2008 was to help collect funds for the payment of the National Youth Employment Programme [NYEP].

This was disclosed by the Public Relations Officer of the Ministry of Finance, Mr. Hakeem Ahmed, when Asempa News sought to find out how far government has gone in collecting the tax as well as its usage since it was introduced.

For the last six months of 2008, the tax accrued an amount of 32million Ghana cedis and that of last year was 87million cedis out of a target figure of 100million Ghana cedis.

Hakeem Ahmed said there have been suggestions that even radio and television networks should be charged for the talk tax but that has not been feasible.

He said a new equipment for the proper monitoring of the talk tax has been promised by government and will soon be delivered.
